Photographs of California Rocks

Geologically, as in so many other ways, California is just a wild and crazy place, a gigantic zoo filled with strange species of all things including rocks. Here I have included images from Death Valley National Park, Yosemite National Park and Joshua Tree National Park.

Joshua Tree National Park 2007 – present: If the USA has a national sculpture gallery, it might be Joshua Tree National Park in southeastern California. Magma cooled down below the earth’s surface and then exposed to the forces of water, wind and slow erosion has evolved into the wonderful variety of sculptural shapes of the granite rocks scattered across the park. The complimentary juxtaposition of the rocks and the anthropomorphic Joshua Trees make this area one of my favorite visual places in the world. I have explored the park four or five times with my camera, and I can’t wait to get back there to look for more of startling sculpture, which almost seems intentional, in the rocky formations.
