Private Residence

This private residence is located on a very beautiful, but small site along Lake Champlain in Vermont. The main concept for the design was how to make a large house break down in scale to fit the site. Several strategies were used: 1) break the house down into two primary masses connected by a bridge and to use a variety of forms within the two masses to echo the site characteristics, 2) get the house to settle into the site by layering the elevations of the house with changing textures from rough to smooth (slate to shakes to clapboards) and 3) work with color to blend into the rocky site.

The project allowed us to design a wide variety of interior environments and to work very closely with fine woodworkers, metal workers and cabinet makers as evidenced in the interior stair detail.
